Parenting Is A Gift

Parenting Is A Gift

Parenting is a wondrous gift that affects us deeply. In the most natural of ways, parenting fountains forth a wellspring of love. I believe it is the essence of all goodness. It is no longer talk; it is truly action in process. I think the action sheds light on what the word “Love” really means too. It gives what is needed. It always encourages and supports. As the Bible describes it in 1 Corinthians 13, love never fails… I believe love’s appeal is so great for many reasons, especially in parenting, and there is no denying that the language of love is universal and understood by all. My mother and I used to have this quarrel when I was younger. Each of us would go back and forth saying, “I love you more.” Well once my wife and I had Maddie, my quarrel with my mother died. She won and I knew it. If you are parenting, you know exactly what I mean… Parenting is a gift!

I remember this day like it was yesterday, though it was nearly 13 years ago. Maddie and I were on the trampoline bouncing. Her smiles lit me up about as much as her bouncing did for her. I recall her taking my wedding ring that day and dropping it accidentally in the grass. After quite a bit of searching, we eventually found it. I also remember that this home was the first one that my family and I had purchased together, but I soon realized afterwards that “home” was really wherever my family was… Family and parenting are gifts beyond measure. I say it often, “Wealth is much more than just finances.”

Believe it or not, this little girl is growing up. She is the center of my blog post today, because her birthday is this weekend. She’s going to be 14!!! Wow… Where does the time go?Parenting As I look back over the years, I have found that Maddie has grown me in ways I would have never grown without her. I used to think I was a patient man. My precious wife had Maddie and thus we began the journey of parenting. I soon found out the perception of my patience was an utter falsehood. I realized then, as much as I do now, I have much to learn and a lot of selfishness to overcome. The world is MUCH less about me and much more about her and others. For all of the dads out there, you get where I’m coming from I think… Kiddos change things. They just do! I don’t mean this in a bad way; it’s meant for good. If you haven’t arrived into manhood already, kiddos force us there in a sense. Our viewpoint on a lot of things change dramatically, especially when we have girls. Believe me! In addition to my gorgeous wife, I have three lovely girls and two handsome boys. Maddie is the oldest of them all. Parenting, in addition to a strong and stable marriage, is one of the greatest gifts God has given to me and I have found myself to be wealthy beyond measure.

So… What do you get a 14 year old for her birthday? My wife and I thought on this subject quite a bit and we settled on something that didn’t involve a financial cost. I’m still shelling out the bucks for her iPhone from Christmas, which I’m happy to do, but we still wanted to do something special for her. My wife came up with something better: Time! For her birthday, we decided to give her more time. One on one time that is… Her bedtime has been increased and it gives her and us one on one time. It’s residual in the sense that it’s a gift that keeps on giving. It costs us nothing and it gains us everything. My wife…what a woman!!

I’m so proud of my Maddie. She is maturing and developing into a fine godly young woman. She is building her house of character board by board. A teacher, Mr. Hay, recently nominated her at school for the “Endurance Award.” Talk about proud. Watching her walk across the stage to receive that award meant more to me than a straight A report card. What is better than character and one that perseveres? It is a sure reward in itself. As long as I live, I will consider parenting to be a gift, especially parenting Maddie. Yes, the cost is great, but the exchange leaves us (me) much better than we (I) would have ever been without it.

Maddie, I love you with all of my heart!! Hugs, kisses, and blessings from above! May He show you His lovingkindness, faithfulness, and favor all of the days of your life. Walk in His ways, believe upon the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall be a great child of The King! Obedience to His commands is how you show your love for Him. Do Him honor and live rightly before Him and others. By His grace, He will give you what He commands. And I promise you, He will give you SO MUCH MORE!
